It’s time again!

Welcome to the 4th edition (at last we are in Premodern territory!) of the European Championship in Premodern!

Polish your brews, book your tickets and get ready to devour loads of currywurst and weißbier! We are back in Darmstadt, Germany (20 minutes from Frankfurt Airport) in a new bigger venue! Join us September 29th to October 1st for a weekend full of Magic.

Info & registration

When: 30th September 2023. Start: 10.00 (Doors open up at 09.00.)

Where: Rodensteinweg 2, 64293 Darmstadt, Germany

Tournament fee: 450 SEK (40 €)

Registration: Registration and payment are both done in Tolaria.app. If you don't have an account there you need to create one and the direct link only works if you are logged in. Otherwise you need to search for the event.

Payment: As said, payment is done in Tolaria. Please pay as soon as possible as your spot isn’t guaranteed until you’ve paid.

Food: During two of the rounds there will be extra time between rounds to eat and there is a budget friendly restaurant on site as well as other alternatives within walking distance.

Drinks: There will be a bar on site with well priced drinks. No own drinks can be brought into the venue.

Should life happen and you need to cancel? You will get a full refund for cancellations up until three weeks before the event starts (i.e., September 9th as of latest). After that it is sadly too late and no refund will be given. Please let us know as soon as possible if you cannot attend. You find contact info further down.

Friday & Sunday events: There will be even more meetups and events during the weekend. More information further down.

Spectators: We will not allow spectators because of space and security.

Tournament Rules & Info

Structure: Regular Swiss + Top 8. We will do 50 min timed rounds.

Rounds: 33 - 64 players = 6 rounds; 65 - 128 players = 7 rounds; 129+ = 8 Rounds

Cap: 220 players. (We are in a new bigger venue)

Judges: We will play at Regular REL but we’ll still have multiple judges at the event to make sure everything flows; answering any rules questions, or solving weird board states and disagreements.

Rules: The rules of Premodern, including the legal sets and banned cards, can be found on http://premodernmagic.com/rules

Reprints/Proxies: The European Championships are non-proxy events. All tournament legal reprints are allowed. That means that you can play either your Alpha, Japanese 4th, or Magic 2011 Lightning Bolt. Note that Collector's Edition (ICE/CE) and World Championship/Gold Bordered cards are not allowed at European Championships.

Deck lists/photos: You need to upload both a list and a photo of your deck before September 28th 23.59 CEST (UTC +2) on Tolaria.app. No deck changes are allowed after that and there might be deck checks.

You will be disqualified from the event if you have not uploaded your deck list and photo before the deadline.

Prizes: We don’t believe in monetary prizes for community-created formats, and the prize support for the Euro Champs will reflect that. Top 8:ing the Euro Champs earns you bragging rights while enjoying a weekend of awesome community gatherings! There will of course be trophies/plaques to the Top 8 as well as some sweet memorabilia for Top 16, a Spice award for the spiciest deck, and give-a-way tokens to every participant.

Any revenues beyond the necessary organizing costs will exclusively go to charity. This year, our donations will go to Die Clown Doktoren EV, an affiliate to Clowns in Medicine and Nursing Germany, which help bring joy to sick children during hospital stay. Feel free to make further donations for this fund here: https://www.clown-doktoren.de/ihre+unterstuetzung/online+spende/

Companion app: We will use the Wizards Companion App for the tournament so have it downloaded before the tournament

16:30 Meetup for playing and hanging out at the main event site.

Come celebrate an early Octoberfest with us at the Altes Schaulthaus to socialize, eat some Octobefest themed food, drink some beverages, and play whatever you feel like. Premodern? Old School? Cube? Bring your cards, find opponents and enjoy the gathering! We open the doors at 16:30.

For those who like to play a little more organized, we’ll throw a Premodern FNM(Register in Tolaria) fixed at 4 rounds (best of 3; sideboard after game 1) regardless of the amount of players. The FNM-event is organized via Tolaria.app, and is free of charge. Anyone going 4-0 gets a free beer! FNM starts at 17.00

We will also offer 4 tables of Premodern Repack Booster Draft starting at 17.00 CET. Register here (limited number of slots!).

Saturday — September 30th

The main event!

Do we need to say more than the info above?

Sunday — October 1st

If you’re not sick of Magic already, there will be even more tournaments to play on Sunday. These tournaments are run by Mitja Held at the same event site. More info can be found here (Facebook event).

Some more information

Vendor

Sky Guild, led by Mitja Held, will set up shop at the Euro Champs site. Time to trade! So don’t forget to bring your binders, but also remember that no other “professional” trading is allowed at the event.

Live coverage

Of course Wak-Wak will stream the whole event! Some players will thus be asked to play their match on stream, a.k.a. the feature table.

Who are behind this mess?

So who makes up the the Horrible Horde that’s organizing this hopefully awesome event?

Short answer: The same as last year!

Long answer:

As you might have realized already (you are on Wak-Wak.se after all), the main host for this year is Wak-Wak. More precisely, the drunk from the stream, Gordon Andersson, and our resident Premodern expert Anton Glans.

But we couldn’t do it by ourselves so we recruited the best help anyone could hope for in the form of Mitja Held and his store Sky Guild, as well as the Premodern guru, and Darmstadt local Jens Jaeger.

And of course, as this is the official European Championship, it wouldn’t be possible to do without the Premodern founder himself, Martin Berlin.
